Repair Clothes Sustainably

Presented by Alameda County Library

Got a pile of clothes that need to be mended? Tired of throwing away clothes with rips, tears, holes, or stains? Before you get rid of it, try your hand at fixing it! Repairing and reusing things instead of dooming them to the landfill is one of the biggest things you can do to be sustainable. Come on in and join us as we share mending knowledge and work independently to patch our well-loved clothing items.

Please bring the clothing or cloth items (i.e. backpacks, purses) that you wish to fix. (No broken objects, furniture, or electronics.) We will provide all the tools and materials needed to do basic mending, but you are also welcome to bring fabric for patches if you have a particular vision. We will share some basic techniques that we are familiar with, including basic patches, darning holes, sewing buttons back on, embroidering over stains, and needle-felting to fix holes in wool sweaters. We will work on our clothes together and share our knowledge!

This is a drop in, monthly event; no registration is required.

Please note that library staff will not be repairing items for members and that some damage may be beyond the point where we can help you figure out how to fix it.

We at ACLibrary care about your privacy. None of our live programs are recorded.

An ASL (American Sign Language) interpreter or closed captioning can be provided for this program if requested at least seven (7) days in advance. For assistance, please contact your library or [email protected].
