Taiko Drumming

Prerequisite: Age 15+

There is an additional material fee of $120 per six-week session from each participant payable to the instructor in order to cover maintenance costs of taiko materials. For example, the skin of a taiko drum has a very limited lifespan and therefore has to be replaced intermittently. The replacement cost of each skin per drum is over $1000.

Taiko is the art of Japanese drumming, which develops self-expression and musical creativity. This course engages in uchikomi based practice. The one who has either a sense of rhythm or a stamina to hit taiko for one hour are welcome. In each class, everyone will participate by playing on actual drums. Minimum age is 18 years old. *Additional material fee payable to instructor at first class. All the equipment – including drums & sticks – are provided. 

PLEASE NOTE: Taiko is a physical activity requiring fitness and stamina. Taiko is a demanding and challenging endeavor. It requires peak physical conditioning and flexible joints and muscles. 

Similar to a martial arts practice, we practice with bare feet.  No accessories including watches, rings, bracelets, earrings, necklaces, socks, and shoes (except Tabi) and no food in class please.
