The short film Contemporary Indigenous Voices of California's South Coast Range is an intimate portrayal of leaders of Indigenous communities, providing a platform for them to share their stories around connections to land, climate change, and rematriation: restoring the relationship between Indigenous people and their ancestral land. Photographer and documentarian Kirti Bassendine will discuss her exhibit and accompanying films. Her work has been featured across California, including at the de young Museum of Fine Art, San Francisco and the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History, and been published nationwide.
Kirti Fatania-Bassendine is a photographer born in Kenya who emigrated to England at a young age and her artistic expression was shaped by her experiences growing up within a minority culture. She graduated with BA Honors in Fine Art Photography from Derby University, England. Over the past four years, she’s been dedicated to capturing and sharing the stories of Indigenous community chairpersons and members from California’s South Coast Range.
