The primary purpose of the lifeguard training program is to provide entry-level lifeguard skills and knowledge to prevent, recognize, and respond to emergencies and to provide care for sudden illnesses until advanced medical personnel arrives and takes over. This program includes a lifeguard training course with aquatics-specific first aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training. Note: Participants MUST pass the pre-test on the first day of class. The test consists of the following: 300-yard swim; tread water for 2 minute without the use of arms; swim 20 yards, then surface dive to retrieve a 10-lb brick, swim back to the starting point with both hands on the brick, and climb out of the water without assistance, skill must be performed in under 1 minute 40 seconds. Depending on the skills of the participants and their comprehension of the materials presented, the participants may be dismissed early or need to stay later each day.
