Shigemi Sanders Clay Festival:
The beauty and cultural depths of Japan are highlighted in Clay Festival, the October exhibit in Gallery 9. Shigemi Sanders’ ceramic works of soothing colors and joyful expressions reflect Sanders’ 50 years of developing her mastery of the delicate techniques in throwing and glazing.
Her past and present art works include Raku, a 400-year-old Japanese firing method, that uses low firing and reducing to bring out a delicate, earthly appearance, and soda glazing, that bring out a pleasingly natural color and earthly texture of flame pattern. Using these different methods of firing, Sanders creates ceramics with imaginative and unique qualities. This Clay Festival will showcase Sanders’ long history and evolution working with clay.
