Part 1: Speech
Dates: Thursdays, September 19 – October 10
Time : 4:00 – 5:30 PM
Length: 4 weeks
Focus: Speech includes confidence-building through a series of games and exercises focused on the following:
- persuasive speaking and body language,
- a basic understanding of the types of speech,
- exposure to both enjoyable and inspirational speeches, and
- application of speaking skills
Final Presentation: Week 4
Part 2: Debate
Dates: Thursdays, October 17 - December 19 (There will be NO class on Oct. 31st & November 28).
Time: 4:00 – 5:30 PM
Length: 8 weeks
Focus: For debate, students will explore social justice issues within the framework of speech and debate. This will sharpen their critical thinking skills and build confidence in their ability to speak and defend an argument while developing an understanding of what it means to be a global citizen in the 21st Century. Students will learn about discrimination against marginalized communities from one of these four groups:
- people who are unhoused
- people with a disability
- refugees and immigrants
- people of various gender identities and sexual orientations
Final Presentation: Week 8
Classroom Expectations
Attendance: As students will be working collaboratively, they are expected to attend all sessions.
Final Presentations: Family members are encouraged to attend final presentations in Week 4 (Speech) and Week 12 (Debate).
Reading Comprehension: In order for students to fully participate, they should have at least a 4th-grade level of reading comprehension.
Zoom: This program will be entirely virtual, conducted over Zoom. Students are required to actively communicate and keep their camera and microphone on throughout.

The class is run with the support of the program’s founder and specialist, teen and young adult volunteers and librarians, including a member of the Racial Equity Team at San José Public Library.

Học sinh sẽ học về phân biệt đối xử với các cộng đồng bị thiệt thòi, từ một trong bốn nhóm sau:
- những người vô gia cư
- người khuyết tật
- người tị nạn và người nhập cư
- những người có giới tính và khuynh hướng tình dục khác nhau

Những mong muốn của lớp học

Parte 2: Debate
Fechas: Jueves, 17 de octubre - 19 de diciembre (NO habrá clases el 31 de octubre y el 28 de noviembre).
Hora: 4:00 – 5:30 PM
Duración: 8 semanas
Enfoque: Debate, los estudiantes explorarán temas de justicia social dentro del marco del discurso y el debate, agudizando sus habilidades de pensamiento crítico y generando confianza en su capacidad para hablar y defender un argumento mientras desarrollan una comprensión de lo que significa ser un ciudadano global en el siglo 21. Los estudiantes aprenderán sobre la discriminación contra las comunidades marginadas, de uno de estos cuatro grupos:
- personas sin hogar
- personas con discapacidad
- refugiados e inmigrantes
- personas de diversas identidades de género y orientaciones sexuales.
Presentación final; Semana 8
Expectativas del salón de clases
- Como los estudiantes trabajarán en colaboración, se espera que asistan a todas las sesiones.
- Se anima a los miembros de la familia a asistir a las presentaciones finales en semana 4 (Discurso) y semana 12 (Debate).
- Para que los estudiantes participen plenamente, deben tener al menos un nivel de comprensión de lectura de 4to grado.
- Este programa será completamente virtual, realizado a través de Zoom. Se requiere que los estudiantes se comuniquen activamente y mantengan su cámara y micrófono encendidos en todo momento.
La clase es posible con el apoyo del fundador y especialista del programa, voluntarios adolescentes y adultos jóvenes y bibliotecarios, incluido un miembro del Equipo de Equidad Racial en la Biblioteca Pública de San José.

Description
Ngày 19 tháng 9 - Ngày 19 tháng 12 năm 2024 từ 4-5:30 chiều. (Sẽ KHÔNG có lớp học vào ngày 31 tháng 10 và ngày 28 tháng 11).
Trong hai phần Diễn thuyết & Tranh luận này, học sinh từ lớp 4 đến lớp 5 sẽ cùng nhau làm việc theo nhóm.
Phần 1: Bài Diễn Thuyết
Những Ngày: Các Thứ Năm từ ngày 19 tháng 9 - ngày 10 tháng 10
Thời gian: 4-5h30 chiều
Thời lượng: 4 tuần
Trọng tâm: Bài Diễn Thuyết bao gồm việc xây dựng sự tự tin thông qua một loạt trò chơi và bài tập được tập trung vào:
- khả năng nói thuyết phục và ngôn ngữ cơ thể,
- hiểu cơ bản về các loại bài phát biểu,
- tiếp xúc với các bài phát biểu thú vị, và
- truyền cảm cũng như áp dụng các kỹ năng nói

Phần 2: Tranh luận
Những Ngày: CácThứ năm, ngày 17 tháng 10 - ngày 19 tháng 12 (Sẽ KHÔNG có lớp học vào ngày 31 tháng 10 và ngày 28 tháng 11).
Thời gian: 4-5h30 chiều
Thời lượng: 8 tuần
Trọng tâm: Tranh luận, học sinh sẽ khám phá các vấn đề công bằng xã hội trong khuôn khổ diễn thuyết và tranh luận - trau dồi kỹ năng tư duy phản biện và xây dựng sự tự tin về khả năng nói và bảo vệ lập luận đồng thời phát triển sự hiểu biết về ý nghĩa của việc trở thành một công dân toàn cầu trong thế kỷ 21. Học sinh sẽ học về phân biệt đối xử với các cộng đồng bị thiệt thòi, từ một trong bốn nhóm sau:
- những người vô gia cư
- người khuyết tật
- người tị nạn và người nhập cư
- những người có giới tính và khuynh hướng tình dục khác nhau
Bài thuyết trình cuối vào: tuần thứ 8
Những mong muốn của lớp học
- Vì học sinh sẽ làm việc chung, các em phải tham gia tất cả các buổi học.
- Các thành viên trong gia đình được khuyến khích tham dự các buổi thuyết trình cuối cùng vào Tuần 4 (Diễn thuyết) và Tuần 12 (Tranh luận).
- Để học sinh có thể tham gia đầy đủ, các em phải đạt trình độ đọc hiểu tối thiểu từ lớp 4 trở lên.
- Chương trình này sẽ hoàn toàn ảo, được thực hiện qua Zoom. Học sinh được yêu cầu phải thương xuyên thảo luận và luôn mở máy ảnh và micrô của mình lên.
Lớp học được điều hành với hỗ trợ của người sáng lập và chuyên gia của chương trình, thiếu niên và thanh niên tình nguyện và thủ thư, cùng với một thành viên của Nhóm Công bằng chủng tộc tại Thư viện Công cộng San José.
